I've offically been in the Indian Ocean!! I just returned from a long weekend to the southern Indian city of Varkala, which is in the state of Kerala (pronounced care-la). We stayed on the beach and it was so relaxing. It was an adjustment though, seeing as it was 90 degrees with close to 100% humidity. We didn't really think about the fact that we were extremely close to the equator, therefore the sun is much harsher. I thought I was being so responsible the first day on the beach and I wore 30 sunscreen!! 30! This is a big deal for me.. I have a hard time putting on higher than 8, like I said, I was being responsible. Well, turns out that the whole equator thing really gets ya.. we all ended up getting really bad burns. Despite our lack to take our proximity to the equator into account, the beach was great. Paige and I were out in the ocean for a good 2-3 hours straight getting thrashed in the waves.
The main draw in Kerala is of course the beach, but the back waters are pretty amazing as well. The day after we all got burned to a crisp on the beach we decided to take a day away from the beach, so we took a boat ride through the back waters and it truely was amazing to see people living in the jungles of India. Their homes are right on the shore of the back waters, the plant life is so thick it's trying to take everything over. The people use the backwaters as a way to get around. If they need to go into the village, they hop into their boat and paddle to the shore where the village is. Despite bringing 2 liters of water each on this little backwater extravaganza, I'm pretty sure I got heat stroke half way through. While our boatman was teaching Maxine how to make string from coconut husks (you'll see a picture) I was contemplating the fact that I just might die in the Indian backwaters, yes it was just that hot. Anyway, we think we're going to take a few weekends off of traveling and stay in Delhi. We want to see more markets and we figure staying in Delhi wouldn't be the worst thing for our bank accounts. I love you all and I hope all is well in your lives!
